Such a lovely selection of girls, Gladys thought. She could easily choose one here for her David. Or rather, David should pick somebody out. One of them was bound to be a good match. They were all age appropriate, and to her knowledge, with the exception of that tart Sadie, were all untouched by somebody else, if you get my drift.
David was running out of time, in Gladys’ eyes, and it was time for him to stop running around with those boys in town and pick himself out a wife. David took good care of her, always watching out for her and making sure she had whatever she needed, especially now that she was a widow. But those town boys were nothing but trouble, especially that Brian, who was always over to the house and hovering over David. A nice boy, but he really needed to get himself a girlfriend as well. Those two boys were constantly going to the movies or fishing in the cove or gallivanting into the city just to go to some sordid nightclub, places where David was not going to meet many appropriate women.
So what to do? Well, it was summer and the water was fine and a quickie picnic was just the ticket. Gladys enlisted the help of her friend Jeannie to bring her daughter, who was no great shakes but had some nice friends to bring along. Tell David to put his bead on one of them and get to work, for heaven’s sake. She wasn’t getting any younger, and the grandchildren weren’t going to have themselves.
Such a nice group of girls on that July day. Now she just had to shake that clingy Brian off David. They always seemed to prefer each other’s company to some pretty girl. So annoying.
